Model Collection Insurance

Post by Teri_Wilde » Mon Feb 12, 2018 5:12 pm

Hi everyone... as my collection grew in size; it obviously grew in value too, it worried me a little thinking that it's an awful lot time and money that I've invested over the years not to have it insured... so over the past 8 weeks I've contacted a number of Insurance Providers which specialise in covering Model Collections. after getting a few idiotic quotes, I got a very good deal from Highworth Insurance who have provided me with one years full cover for a calculated value of £8500 for a mere £65.94...! I have had a very lengthy conversation with them with a very long list of questions of what exactly they cover. I gave them a list of my exact requirements of what I wanted the policy to include and they ticked all my boxes.

so here's a summary of what I'm getting for my £65.94 a year....

FULLY insured whilst at Home, covered completely separate from any House Contents Insurance (T&C's apply)
FULLY insured whilst in transit to and from a Show, Meeting, Exhibition or Event completely separate from my Car Insurance (T&C's apply)
FULLY insured at a Show, Meeting, Exhibition or Event (T&C's apply)

At home: full cover applies for Loss or Damage and will not take into consideration any other cover from other Household Buildings and Contents Insurance.
in Transit: full cover applies for Loss or Damage and will not take into consideration that Car Insurance covers "up to £500 vehicle contents cover"
At Event: full cover applies for Loss or Damage to models or equipment but does not extend to Public Liability.

Exhibition and transit: The Insured Property is covered whilst on exhibition (dates must be confirmed prior for this to be covered) and whilst in transit to and from. No cover is given if the Insured Property is left unattended and unsupervised whilst children are present. An excess of £100 will apply. You must ensure that the Insured Property is property packed for transit having regard to the nature of the item(s) and take all reasonable steps to ensure that the Insured Property will be sorted and packed in such a manner as to withstand the normal hazards associated with storage or transit.

Working models: Public liability insurance is excluded from this policy. There is no cover for the item insured whilst the engine is running and in use.

In Transit: the collection is covered in the car whilst travelling to and from an Event, and includes Western Europe for when I go to Dortmund... cover extends to short period where the car and contents are left unattended in a Ferry where you're not allowed to stay with the vehicle during the crossing. it will be insured if I stop off at a Motorway Services for a short "comfort break". they say that "Due Diligence" is considered that it would be unreasonable to unload the car and take everything into the toilets. "Due Diligence" means I must take care that I don't park the car in a dark corner and I've take reasonable care to ensure the car is parked in a safe place and secured. the Items covered are pack securely and in such a way that they're not just place unsecured on the back seat or in the boot.

I read the Terms & Conditions very carefully and asked questions based on what I'd read and I'm happy to have the policy knowing that. Because there is extensive photographic documentation of my property and equipment, which prove ownership, and value (and replacement value) can be proved they are happy to provide cover for for my exacting needs. and believe me, I was disusing my requirements for a week and there was a number of phone calls between Highworth and me, and Highworth and the Underwriters.., so, I'm confident that should there be a need to claim; I will be covered...

In light of the recent theft of a Model Truck at Peterbororgh Truckfest I thought it would be a good idea to bump this post to bring Insurance to your attention....

at a RC Truck Meet, Truck Show or Model Exhibition you must be aware that whilst the organiser should have Public Liability Insurance; they will not be liable for any damage to your model/exhibit unless they've specified that your model/exhibit is included in their cover... I spent many hours on the phone to various insurance companies that deal with specialist policies which would cover hobby and model collections... so please read the original post above and consider whether you would consider insuring your pride and joy... I'm paying a mere £66 a year to cover all my models, transmitters and tools which I've valued at £8500... which is probably undervalued but the likely hood that I'll suffer a total loss of everything is minimal...

Hi guys just to note that I tried to get the same sort of cover from them but was advised this only comes witha home contents cover not sure if teri mentioned it. But they wont do a separate cover just for the trucks.
I'm still looking if anyone has any suggestion

My cover is just for my model trucks, transmitters, tools, boxes..., everything that I bring to an RC truck meet... it is not a part of my home contents insurance and it is not a part of my car insurance. It is completely separate... it seems strange that they won't cover somebody for exactly the same as what they're covering me for...
